Should You Keep a Corgi's Tail? Docking and Dew Claws
Pembroke Welsh Corgis are famous for their short or missing tails, and many first-time buyers do not realize the tail is a choice. Here is how it works at our farm, and what to think about before you decide.
Why are some Pembrokes tailless?
Traditionally, Pembrokes had their tails docked as puppies because they were working herding dogs. Some Pembrokes are born with a naturally short tail, called a bobtail. Others are born with a full-length tail. Many companion dogs today keep their natural tails.
Do you keep tails on request?
Yes. I am one of the few full fluffy Pembroke breeders who will keep tails on request. If you would like your puppy to keep its tail, tell me early. The decision must be made within four days of birth, so it is best to discuss it when you reserve your puppy.
Tails and dew claws on our puppies are intact unless a family requests otherwise, and the puppies you see on our Puppies page have both.
What about dew claws?
Dew claws are the small claws on the inside of the legs. Some owners keep them, others have them removed. Like the tail, the choice must be made within four days of birth. If you keep them, trim them regularly so they do not snag.
How do you decide?
Think about how you will live with your dog. A natural tail is part of how corgis communicate and balance. Some owners prefer the traditional look, and others want the full fluffy tail, which looks beautiful on a long-coat corgi.
There is no wrong answer. What matters is that you decide early and talk with me about it.
What does the timeline look like?
Because the window is only four days, join the waitlist and tell me your preference before the litter arrives. Pups are chosen at three to four weeks, but the tail and dew claw decision comes first.
If you would like to talk through your options, call or text (660) 234-5656, or request the Puppy Questionnaire.
What should you consider about the tail?
A full tail on a fluffy corgi is beautiful and helps with balance and communication. Some families worry about the tail catching on things or about the look they grew up with. There is no right choice, but it is a permanent one, which is why it deserves a conversation.
I am glad to talk through what to expect with either choice.
What about the breed standard?
The traditional Pembroke look includes a very short or docked tail, so some show homes prefer it. A natural tail is common in many companion homes. Because our puppies are family pets with Limited Registration, tails and dew claws are your decision.
If you plan to show or compete, ask a breeder about the rules of the organization you want to join.
How do you care for a corgi with a full tail?
Brush the tail feathering so it does not tangle, trim around the base if needed and keep the area clean. Check for matting after play and baths.
When you are ready to discuss your preference, call or text me at (660) 234-5656, or request the Puppy Questionnaire. Remember that the decision must be made within four days of birth.
Questions to ask your breeder
Ask whether tails are kept, how and when the decision is made, what happens to dew claws and whether the choice affects registration. Ask who performs the procedure, if one is requested, and what the aftercare is.
Our approach is simple: tails and dew claws stay unless a family asks otherwise within four days of birth.
How should you decide?
Talk with your vet, think about your lifestyle and look at photos of adult dogs with both tail types. If you are on the fence, ask for time to think, but remember the window is short.
I am always happy to talk it over by phone.
Is it a permanent decision?
Yes, once a tail or dew claw is removed it cannot be undone, which is why I ask families to think carefully and decide within four days of birth. Keeping them leaves every option open.
If you are unsure, I recommend keeping the natural tail. You can always talk with your vet about it later.
Do tails and dew claws affect health?
Neither has a significant effect on overall health when cared for properly. Dew claws should be trimmed so they do not catch, and the tail should be kept clean and brushed. As always, a healthy weight and regular vet care matter more than either choice.
Is there a difference in price?
No. Tail and dew claw choices do not change the puppy's price. Pet-home puppies are $2,250 with AKC Limited Registration. See our Pricing page for full details.
